Most curators know a visit to an artist’s studio brings an understanding of the artist and their work that cannot be gained in any other way. The practice is exposed, as well as the inspirations and limitations presented by the artist’s physical space. The detritus of the creative process has its own beauty and story to tell.
For over ten years, artist Anne Humanfeld has kept her studio in the rapidly changing Port Morris section of the South Bronx; her windows survey some of the hotly debated areas slated for luxury development on the Harlem River. There is the feeling of a vanishing community in the air. Humanfeld’s work is somewhat reminiscent of lost things, and her strong ethereal images bring to mind a feeling of interwoven memories and how they can inform and alter our views of the present.
“The idea for the Studio Salon is to offer a more intimate and immersive experience where attendees can really feel the excitement of creation. People are always interested in seeing where an artist works, and Anne has such a great space,” said artist and curator Laura James, who with gallerist and curator Eileen Walsh make up BXNYCreative, a new group of cultural consultants specializing in Bronx artists. “Anne’s work is rich and detailed, and each time we have visited the studio we’ve enjoyed having the time to look closely at the fine details and contemplate the poetic and unique images she creates,” said Walsh.
Anne Humanfeld was born and grew up in New York City and attended Music and Art High School, Sarah Lawrence College and SUNY Empire State College. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows at the Zabriskie Gallery, NYC, at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, Haven Gallery, Bronx, as well as in numerous group exhibitions and publications. She is represented in the collection of the First National Bank of Chicago, curated by Katharine Kuh.
