More Information:
DreamYard is hosting our second annual, Maker Institute – a three-day intensive teaching artist training from April 10 to April 12. Click here to see a video of last year’s Maker Institute.
DreamYard seeks applicants who identify as active makers, artists, and/or educators and have some experience using creative technologies (physical computing, 3D design/printing, soft circuits, coding, etc) in their teaching or artmaking process. The Maker Institute will introduce participants to DreamYard’s approach to making, which integrates both art and social justice pedagogy, as well as support the development of new creative technology skills and creation of projects that are inspired by the communities we work with in the Bronx.
Participation in the institute is free and an application is required. Accepted participants must commit to the entire institute which runs from Monday, April 10th through Wednesday, April 12th, 10am-4pm. Lunch will be provided each day, as well as all materials and resources.
DreamYard actively works to broaden the definition of “making” and who is seen as a “maker.” We strongly encourage applicants who are from groups underrepresented in STEAM fields, as well as applicants who live in the Bronx and/or who work with under-served communities.
Goals of the Institute:
Share DreamYard’s Maker Approach : Participants will learn about DreamYard’s unique approach to maker education, which integrates social justice and art into a wide range of making and design practices.
Practice Hands-On Learning with Creative Tech : Each participant will develop a collaborative hands-on, creative project rooted in social justice and their own maker practice.
Build Community : Participants will learn how to build a positive and supportive community in the classroom and have a chance to network with maker and design peers. On the final day of the institute, we will host young people and other community members to participate in a Maker Jam event. The Jam will be a chance for guests to experience the projects developed by the participants and for participants to experience the results of their lesson planning in real time.
