ArtBridge is partnering with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to produce large-scale step street murals at two sites in the West Bronx:

West 176th Street & Jerome Ave
Henwood Place

The Bronx’s 63 step streets are vital pedestrian pathways, providing residents with shortcuts through the Bronx’s hilly terrain. Activating these unique spaces with large-scale murals will, we hope, highlight step streets as a cornerstone of Bronx pedestrian culture, showcase local artistic talent, and promote community health by fostering new opportunities for physical activity and social interaction.

We are seeking Bronx-based artists to help enhance walkability through the power of public art. Mural proposals that convey ideas of motion or healthy activity will be prioritized, as will proposals that demonstrate an understanding of local values, culture, and neighborhood identity. Artists should demonstrate a strong interest in engaging the community through a participatory creative process.

The murals will be painted directly on the steps, so all proposals must include a rough mockup (see photos of the steps and examples below). Artists may submit a proposal for one or both sites. One artist will be selected for each site. You may submit as many proposals as you would like, at no cost.

All paint materials for this project have been generously donated by Liquitex Artist Materials, the first in its field to develop water-based acrylic paints.

Honorarium

Selected artists will receive an honorarium of $3,500. This fee will include the artist’s labor to plan and execute the installation. ArtBridge will pay for all material costs and provide assistance.

Curators

A panel of three curators will select the winners in conjunction with direct community input:

– Bill Aguado: Interim Executive Director, En Foco, Cultural Activist, former Executive Director of the Bronx Council on the Arts.
– Leenda Bonilla: Artist, Creative Placemaker, Community Associate, Partnership for Parks, and lifetime Bronxite.
– Jodi Moise: Curator, Fine Art Program and Collection, Montefiore Health System

DOT Approval

Please note that artwork must be approved by the New York City Department of Transportation, which reviews public art proposals based on the following criteria:

Public Safety

Proposal does not present any public safety hazards.

Artistic Merit

Proposed artwork is aesthetically pleasing and appropriate for the public realm.
Artist’s past work and resume demonstrate proficiency in the proposed medium.
Artist has experience exhibiting in the public and/or private realm.

Site Suitability

Artwork is suitable for the site based on size, scale, and form.
Proposal considers the variety of audiences at the site.

Artwork Durability

Artwork is made of durable materials to withstand outdoor weather conditions
